Abstract: | The region comprising much of northern Nigeria and Niger, referred to as the Central Sudan, provides an example of an integrated desertside economy. The desert played a unique role in the development of the savanna here, where integration enabled the desert sector to survive periods of crippling drought and to prosper in times of favourable weather. The purpose of this article is to explore some of the links between this area and the larger economy in the belief that only a regional perspective on economic and social history can prevent the distortion involved in localized approaches. Sections: the desertside sector - savanna investments - drought and cycles - the desert edge in the colonial period. Map, notes. |
