Abstract:This essay is concerned with exploring the nature of the relationships that can and do exist between a vital subsystem of the South African political system, namely its internal security system, and the external ramifications of its internal security policy. Although the data concern South Africa and Botswana, the research design has been constructed in such a way that it has wider utility, as well as incremental value, in the study of international and comparative politics. The design could be utilized not only for other parts of the Southern African subordinate state system but also for other regional systems having similar racial and geographical dimensions. Scheme: Introduction - The domestic environment - The nature of the variables with accompanying pro-positions (10) - Tentative conclusions. Notes, tables.
