Abstract: | This paper discusses the royal successions during the earliest period of Imerina history, from the Vazimba times (the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries) until the great ruler Andriamasinavalona, the first unifier of Imerina, who ruled during the second half of the seventeenth and the beginning of the eighteenth centuries. The author attempts whenever possible to retrace the origin of the priciples at work in the different modes of designating the king. The last section of the paper deals with the 'Indonesian Tradition'. Fig., notes. |
