Abstract:In 1903 the U.S. Consul in Marseilles, Robert Skinner, was sent to Ethiopia in order to negotiate a commercial treaty with the Emperor Menelik. The treaty was signed December 27th, 1903. Skinner wrote two descriptions of the mission: Abyssinia of Today. An Account of the First Mission sent by the American Government to the Court of the King of Kings (1903-1904), London, 1906; the second account, which never appeared, was conceived as Chapter III of an autobiographical study entitled 'Recollections of life in the Foreign Service of the United States'. This chapter contains significant observations and remarks not included in Abyssinia of Today. Presented here is the text of that chapter.
