Abstract: | The problems of the politics of nation-building are subsumed under three headings: 1. The concept of the national unit, 2. The structure of the state, 3. The political system. The 1st problem is dealt with through a discussion of the Mali expeexperience, Nasser's attempt at supranational nationbuilding, and the Union of African States. The 2nd problem through Lumumba's concept of a unitary state, the Federation of Nigeria, and the Federation of Cameroon. The 3rd problem through Sékou Touré's issue of nation-building, Tafawa Balewa's approach, and the monopoly of political expression in Ghana. A special part of the article deals with nation-building beyond Africa: Asia and Latin America. A summary of the foundations of nation-building is found in the conclusion. References. |
