| Abstract: | Compared with the situation in the early 1960s the balance has tilted unexpectedly in South Africa's favour. The Republic is militarily and economically stronger than ever and her united white population faces a crushed and deeply divided African opposition. This change is reflected in the very different conclusions of two Conferences, respectively held in the U.S. in May 1964 and in the U.K. in April 1967, organized jointly by Chatham House and the Council on Foreign Relations, to discuss the Anglo-American policy towards the problems of Southern Africa. The present Note is a personal view about some of the issues raised. |
