Abstract: | The National Congress of British West Africa, founded in 1920, was the first nationalist movement of its kind in the whole of British West Africa. Described are the background, aims and work of the Congress, and why the movement did not survive the death of its founder in 1930. The conclusion is that although the Congress movement had its failures and shortcomings, it had nonetheless rendered some service to later West African nationalists. Bibl., map, photographs. |
