Abstract:Fluctuations in rural market prices are attributable to a number of factors. First, the seasonal fluctuations of the production are important. Secondly, unfavourable environmental conditions may aggravate price variations. Thirdly, the geographical distance from towns may affect demand and therefore price fluctuations. If rural markets are situated far away from a big market centre, it seems more difficult for them to compete with the attractive and stable prices of markets in the immediate vicinity of the town. This paper explores, how far each of these factors may be hold responsible for the considerable price variations in the rural markets of West Nile. Fig., notes, tables.
