Abstract: | By describing the food stamps programme in the United States - its history, objectives, eligibility requirements, distribution channels, mathematical model and location of the needy people - the author tries to convey the actual experience of this programme to Egyptian policymakers who are striving to improve the existing food pricing and distribution system in Egypt. Besides the food stamps (coupons) programme, two other alternatives are presented and discussed: cash transfer and price subsidies. The impact of these alternatives on consumer's choice and welfare is examined. The author also estimates the effect of household size on the cost of subsidiy of the main food items distributed through the ration books in Egypt. Bibliogr., notes, ref. |
