Abstract:This article is an attempt to indicate how far Engel's law (that the proportion of income spent on food declines as household income rises) is applicable to Ghana. An additional contribution to former surveys on the subject is that the present article is based on information obtained from urban budget surveys and also from the more recent survey conducted by a research team from the University of Edinburgh (March and May, 1962). With regard to the results obtained by previous investigations it is obvious that Engel's law does not apply. However, the middle income Accra (1962) survey shows the law to be applicable. On the income side, the conclusion is that total income from all sources has been neglected and in the Accra (1962) survey there is considerable underreporting of non-wage income. Footnotes; tables.
