Abstract:The paper offers an analysis at micro-level of poverty in a small village on the eastern edge of the Kalahari sandveld. The village has a population of ± 1000 people. The main focus is on the degree of participation of villagers in different income generating activities and the constraints experienced by poorer households which greatly limit their success. The study also investigates different strategies adopted by about 2/3 of the households in their effort to gain access to the major agricultural resources and the alternatives for those who do not succeed.
