Abstract:The consequence of the colonial locational control policies in Central Africa during the interwar period was the establishment of two distinct demographic regimes: a rural one comprised primarily of women, children and old people; and an urban one in which able-bodied men worked for limited periods of time, earning their tax money and then returning to their villages. The author evaluates the effect of these policies on local population change.
