| Abstract: | Zimbabwe had greater dualism in its agricultural sector at independence in September, 1980, than any other tropical African country. One half of the land area was owned by 5,700 European farm families with an average farm size of 1,754 hectares; the other half was held in communal tenure by one million families with an average farm size of 16 hectares. The goal of the Government is to redistribute land to nationals as the formerly European-owned farms come on the market. How is this being accomplished? This article summarizes the challenge, the manner in which resettlement is taking place, and the progress to date. |
