Abstract:The new South Africa has inherited a racist education system based on apartheid. At the same time, the country faces the challenge of reconstruction and rehabilitation after the war of liberation. For reconstruction to be a reality, the new South Africa needs, first and foremost, education. A new education policy, accompanied by educational reforms to wipe out the inheritance of years of colonialism, is required. Unfortunately South Africa has not adopted a national policy that can handle reconstruction and foster economic justice. Economic apartheid remains. The struggle to reconstruct South Africa cannot be divorced from the struggle to rebuild Africa and African scholarship in a post-Cold War world. Academics in South Africa must increase their participation in reconstruction and democratization by bringing their research and teaching more in tune with the goals of a united South Africa. In addition, scholarship in Africa in the post-Cold War era can only be viable if academics develop an 'Independent African Information Network' from within. This will enable Africans to forge better links with the 'Global Information Network'. Bibliogr., sum.
