Abstract: | Purpose of this article is to analyze Reagan's approach to Africa, with particular attention to elements of continuity and change in emerging American policy on Africa following four years of democratic administation. It assesses Reagan's advocacy of closer relations with South Africa as well as his global approach to African problems, a marked departure from the stance of his predecessor, Carter, who had acknowledged that colonialism and racism - rather than Soviet conspiracy -were the crux of the problems in Africa.
