Abstract: | A number of foreign policy analysts have contended that only after World War II, with the gradual disengagement of Great Britain from the Middle East, did the United States assume major responsibilities there. This paper addresses itself to this oft repeated assumption which has served to obscure the extensive official and private contacts, financial holdings and private interest of the United States or its citizens in the Middle East from the close of the revolution in 1783 to the opening of official relations between the United States and the Ottoman Empire in 1830. Sections: James Cath-cart and the Algerian system - trade, tribute and the origins of the U.S. Navy - war in Tripoli and steps toward a permanent base in the Mediterranean - Ottomans and Americans in North Africa: a supplemental note.
