| Abstract: | The scope of the United Nations Development Decade proposals (1962) goes beyond 'economic' objectives. In a resolution of the General Assembly reference is made 'to social advancement, social development, land reform, the elimination of illiteracy, hunger and disease, improvements in education and similar measure of social progress'. This paper aims at a preliminary assessment of the achievements of African countries with reference to the goals set by the General Assembly resolution in question. Most of the data available for use do not go beyond 1967, but it is believed that the trends of developments for the sixties are sufficiently indicated by the figures to warrant a preliminary appraisal. As background and basis for the analysis and conclusions a brief outline of the economic conditions in Africa during much of the development decade is given. Notes, tables, appendix (tables). |
