Abstract:Examination of historical numerical idioms, i.e. numbers which, in particular contexts, assume meanings quite different from their normal numerical significance, in three Semitic languages of Ethiopia, namely Ge'ez, Tegrena, and Amarena. Examples of the use of certain numbers in idiomatic expressions show that some numbers imply greatness or excessiveness of amount, but others merge into the phrases so as to lose their identity as far as meaning is concerned.
