Abstract: | After a description in general of drought and relief in the Sahel zone in West Africa (climatologic circumstances; main livelihood; effects of the drought on crop and livestock; aid by existing government agencies and by international relief agencies), the author gives a survey of drought and relief in individual countries (Senegal; the Gambia; the Cape Verde Islands; Mauritania; Mali; Upper Volta; Niger; Chad; Nigeria). At the end he suggests four conclusions concerning possible human causes. Notes. |
