Abstract:Purpose of this essay is to help identify the causes of the social problem generated by the drought which periodically affects the Sahel region, to assess its effect and to discuss the character of the alternative solutions advanced by government institutions and international organizations: Introduction - Historical background (the pre-colonial phase; the colonial blockage; the exploitative development (mise en valeur) of the region) - Economic policy after independence: the supposed advantages of the international division of labour (the general framework of African agricultural activities; the economic and social situation of the Sahel countries 1960-1970. The consequences of the drought in a context of under-development and dependency - Development strategies and the future of the Sahel (food production and the international division of labour; alternative roles of the Sahel Region in the future international economic order; alternative programmes proposed for the future development of the Region).
