Abstract: | At the beginning of the 19th century an attempt was made to introduce uniform principles into some territories of the Sokoto Caliphate. A century later the British government introduced a new administration with its own set of principles. The theorists of the 19th century based their ideas on traditions of the Islamic world; those of the 20th century a.o. on economic grounds. The article examines the place of these principles in the administration with a view to ascertaining their relevance in the practical scheme of things. Notes. |
