Abstract: | On December 22, 1978, the people of Amaigbo in Nkwerre/Isu Local Government area if Imo State, Nigeria, formally honoured a great son, Mbanaso Okwaraozurumba, also known as Jaja of Opobo (1821-1891). Existing historical account of Jaja's dramatic career in nineteenth century Niger Delta and Igbo history are silent on Jaja's ancestry. Fortunately for posterity, two distinguished descendants of King Jaja's ancestral lineage have come forward with an account of the early life of King Jaja from the records and recollections of his ancestral lineage in Umuduruoha Amaigbo. No account of King Jaja's life would be complete without taking into account the facts of his pre-Bonny and pre Opobo life which helped to shape his character and personality and equipped him for the challenges he was to encounter in his later life. This article presents, from Jaja's own ancestral family, the true story of his ancestry, lineage roots, the circumstances of his disappearance and enslavement, and the later re-union with his family and his lineage segment. Further speculations on these subjects can no longer he justified. - Bibliogr., notes. |
