Abstract:Review of the controversy surrounding the question as to when Osei Tutu, the great king of Asante, founder not only of the Asante nation but also of the Asante empire, died. The present author concludes that Osei Tutu died in 1717 during the war between Akyem and Asante, that his body was never recorvered, and that he was directly succeeded by Opoku Ware. Notes.
