Abstract: | By 1870 the indentured labour system for Indian coolies was well established in Mauritius,British Guiana and Trinidad.Tne author discusses the districts in India from which labourers were recruited, the conditions of service under the indenture system,the opportunities open to the Indian at the end of his indenture. Those who did not settle on the land turned to the professions or trade - the attitude of the 'communities of reception' to the Indian and his adjustment to a multiracial society. |
