| Abstract: | In recent years there has been in South Africa a rapid increase in government spending on incentives for industrial decentralisation. To explain this increase one has to take into account the 'new dispensation': the state needs more than ever to be able to present the bantustans as viable 'nations'. After a short history of industrial decentralisation, the article examines the 1981 decentralisation incentives and the response from investors which was enormous. Notes, tab. |
