Abstract:The authors discuss the functioning of small-scale industries in the formal sector, their actual and potential contribution to solving the problem of unemployment, and their prospects. The immediate objectives are to discuss the characteristics of five selected formal, small-scale firms, their contribution to employment and income generation, the external and internal factors (constraints) which affect their efficiency, and to make some policy recommendations.
