Abstract: | This essay elaborates the thesis that huge capital investments in Nigerian railways acted as the propulsive force for the agricultural sector and in fact the whole economy. The impact of the railways must be judged by the extent to which agriculture was promoted rather than by the direct revenue which they yielded. The first part describes the establishment of Nigerian railways. The second investigates the effects of the railways. The third is a re-evaluation of the problems confronting the railways, which militated against their performance. Ref., table, figure. |
