Abstract:This article is intended as a preliminary reconnaissance of the problem of the transition from subsistence to market agriculture. After summarising the main characteristics of subsistence agriculture and the available information on the relative importance of subsistence agriculture in Africa South of the Sahara it attempts to identify, forst, certain precontions for the development of market agriculture and, secondly, the more important fields in which Government action appears to be necessary.
