Abstract: | Purpose of this paper is to present some findings which bear on the issue of whether transnational corporations (companies whose head office is located outside of Africa) operate differently than indigenous firms in less economically developed countries. Part 1 presents and discusses the results of comparisons made for a variety of indicators for transnational and indigenous firms oparating in the same industry. Part 2 provides an analysis of cross-sectional data where differences of means have been used to test the existence of statistically significant differences between transnational and indigenous firms. Part 3 analyzes, by using production functions, one major area of concern, namely, the contribution of transnational corporations, compared to that of indigenous firms, to the creation of employment opportunities. The results obtained, taken in conjunction with those obtained in part 2, suggest a number of interesting conclusions concerning the interpretation of production function analysis. Notes, tab. |
