| Abstract: | This article discusses the effects of Rhodesia's UDI for Zambia- a land locked nation circumscribed by both geographical and political barriers. The first part is concerned with the description of Zambia's geographical and political isolation, and that of Z.'s dependence on Rhodesia for coal and power in behalf of the Copperbelt. The extent to which Zambia-its government, its finances, its economy and a large part its population - is dependent on copper is briefly indicated by a fewe figures. Having thus shown the quantities involved and the nature of the problem posed for Zambia by UDI, the author examines how Zambia has fared in the face of 16 months of UDI and the measures taken to confront the difficulties. The author concludes that Zambia so far has weathered the storm with remarkable resilience. She has been able to deal with the dangers without incurring overwhelming costs and is even in a position to benefit in the long run by at least some of the capital expenditures, the improved transport network, and the greatly lessened dependence on a single route. |
