Abstract:Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia have in common the practice of resorting to preventive detention, that is detention in the adsence of a court order or other judicial safeguard. The overall intention of the authorities is either to dispose of opponents who are considered dangerous or to shelve a problem which they are unable or unwilling to resolve. Successively the author discusses some cases in Algeria (a.o. Ben Bella and Moise Tshombe), Morocco and Tunisia.
