| Abstract: | Emperor Tewodros, the warrior king who during his reign of 1820-1868 inspired so much awe and bewilderment, has become one of the most popular historical themes in Ethiopian creative writing. He has inspired the writing of six works by some of the major Ethiopian novelists and playwrights, viz. 'Taytu Bitul' by MAKONNEN Endalkacaw, 'Yetewodros Enba' by BERHANU Zerihun, 'And Lannatu' by the ABBE Gubenna, 'Warrior King' by Sahle SELLASSIE Berhane Mariam, 'Tewodros: Tarikawi Drama' by GIRMACCAW Takla Hawariat, and 'Tewodros by TSEGAYE Gabra Madhin. The article describes the image of Tewodros' personality in these works, and the symbolic significance of his actions in their portrayals. Ref. |
