Abstract:In pre-Christian Iboland, polygamy was a universally accepted institution for many reasons. When the Missionaries discovered this problem, they concentrated their efforts on the conversion of children through a network of missionary educational institutions. Although polygamy does exist among Christian Ibo's, the conclusion is that Christianity had been an important factor in limiting polygamy in Iboland. The article ends with a description of other factors which play a limitive role on polygamy. Notes, table.
