Abstract:Angola, the largest country in Portuguese-speaking Africa, consists really of three large territories: the Bakongo in the north, the Kimbundu in the centre, and the Ovimbundu in the south. The early history of colonial Angola, from 1575 to 1836, affected mainly the Kimbundu peoples of the west-central plateau. At the end of this period when the Atlantic slave trade declined, and in a little under a hundred years Portugal spread its influence to its modern boundary. Since 1920, the exploitation of Angola has had to depend greatly on a number of multi-national firms, because Portugal itself lacked economic and financial independence. In addition it was politically unresponsive to democratic or international opinion. Bibl., map, photographs.
