Abstract:In 1529 the Portuguese had been trading at Elmina for fifty-eight years. They had become an established part of the economic structure of West Africa and the present article briefly examines their commercial activities and the organisation of their trade. The information is derived from the 'Regimento da Mina', a ninety-page handbook drawn up in 1529 by the king of Portugal giving detailed instructions about trading procedure to the captain and factor of the City of Sao Jorge da Mina, later known as Elmina Castle.
