Abstract:Currently, the main influence on the rate of population growth in Kenya and especially on the recent increases in that rate is fertility. The present paper focuses on fertility - its past trends and evidence of those factors which determine its present level and the future trend. Sections: demographic background - fertility-levels and trends - previous analysis of fertility differentials and ideal family size - determinants of fertility (the status of women; the socioeconomic theory of fertility; multi-variate analysis).
