Abstract:The author worked in 1966-67 for the Ministry of Social Welfare in Northern Nigeria. Her account of some of the difficulties that can plague work among women stems from her experience in Zaria. In this Moslem Hausa/Fulani milieu the position of the women depends on the form of marriage. Major forms of marriage are auren kulle (closed marriage or purdah), auren tsare (modified purdah), auren jahilai (most free). The success of women's extension work depends on the tackling of the difficulties which accompany the application of foreign structures to particular situations, and also on the co-operation of traditional authorities. The conflict between present family structures and any attempt at female education is also a problem. Where purdah is widely practised and female education not widespread, a women's programme based on participation and self-help seems a less than realistic goal for the immediate future.
