Abstract:Empirical data on local food systems and the sexbased division of labour are presented. In particular, data on tasks allocated to women and the nutritional and technological significance of relevant methods are discussed. Further, an attempt is made to discuss possible impacts of economic and social change on women's role and status in postharvest food conservation. Reference is made to studies regarding Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Zambia, Lesotho, Upper Volta. Ref., tab.
