Abstract: | The author describes the life of Yoruba women in the town of Ede, in which he lived during 1954. Referring to the illiterate women who still follow traditional ways of life he gives a description of what he saw. Though the life of illiterate women has obviously been influenced by culture contacts, it is entirely different from that of the class of women chiefly in Lagos and Ibadan, which is already adopting European ideas and ways of living The assumption, that the indeperidance and freedom of Yoruba women today is entirely the resuit of Vvestern influences, is a wrong one as Yoruba's history has a lot to tell about the prominent achievements of women in - the past. The article has the following chapters: Political, Religious and Economic position today; Marriage; Western influences. |
