Abstract:This article is an attempt to provide the background to the difficult situation in which northern Ghana finds itself today in view of the importance of education not only as a vehicle for social and economic development, but for its political implications. The term 'northern Ghana' as defined in this article includes all those areas of Ghana thathave ever formed part of the Northern Territories between 1st January, 1907, and 6th March, 1957. These are the present Northern and Upper Regions, the Yeji and Prang areas of Brong Ahafo and the Krachi area of the Volta Region.
