Abstract: | During the above conference, held at Khartoum from 8 to 13 November, 1977, three sessions were devoted respectively to the prehistory and ecological transformations of the Central Bilad al-Sudan, the encroachment of the desert, and traditional and modern responses to environmental crises. A total of thirteen papers were presented and discussed by participants of various academic backgrounds (geography, anthropology, archaeology, prehistory, agronomy). There was some measure of agreement among them that man is the chief cause of desertification, and they were generally optimistic about the changes to turn the tide. Another general notion was that of the localised nature of droughts and desertification, calling for different solutions at different places, thus showing the sophistication and complexity of the problem.
