Abstract:Description of the catastrophic situation caused by the major drought in the Sahel-countries (Senegal, Mauritania, Mali. Upper Volta, Niger and Chad). If widespread starvation has not yet resulted, the drought is crippling the economies and damaging the lives of millions of people. The greatest impact has been on livestock, but the crop losses are no less devastating. From a long-range standpoint, one of the worst effects has been to speed the relentless encroachment of the Sahara. An international relief effort is being mounted and the article discusses some emergency programs. Photo's.
