Abstract: | Investigations at Bantama were begun with the aim of proving or disproving the existence of a fourteenth-century French trading post claimed in certain traditions. Excavations revealed a small stone fort, of nineteenth-century Dutch construction, identified as Veersche Schans. Earlier occupations of the site are indicated by a cemetery and a small shell midden, both of uncertain age. Fig., pl., ref., tab. |
