Abstract:This article reports an attempt to investigate the possible connnection in the case of Egypt between import substitution policy and 'Consumption liberalization', here taken to mean a relaxation of controls over domestic consumption. If such a connection can be established it will be of some importance because consumption liberalization will tend to limit the resources available for investment: an effect that will probably be mediated through restriction of export expansion or a pre-empting of import spending for consuption purposes. First possible reasons a priori for connecting import substitution with consumption liberalization are outlined and then empirical evidence of the connection is investigated. Notes, ref., tab.
