Abstract:Study of rural farm women in three different locations in Zambia, undertaken in the Fall of 1982, to assist in documentation of women's labour and financial inputs into farming systems and household activities. It was found that female adults spend 6.6 hours per day in agriculture during the farming season compared with 5.7 for their spouses; at the same time females contribute 4.1 hours per day to household tasks compared with 0.4 for their spouses. When all persons' time allocated to these tasks is totalled by sex, females contribute 53% of the total hours in agriculture and 82% in household tasks. Data were obtained on the farming system - crops and livestock raised, farm operating expenses, income generated by off-farm activities (including petty trade), family living expenses, persons who make decisions as to the percentage of crops sold, use of the husband's and the wife's income. Of the total cash income earned on average per family, females had generated 55% and males 45%.
