Abstract:The people of Equatorial Guinea began to wage opposition to the regime and to create political parties in 1990. The Plataforma de la Oposición Conjunta (Joint Opposition Platform, POC) regrouped a number of political movements, including the Partido del Progreso (Progress Party, PP), the Convergencia para una Democracia Social (Convergence for Social Democracy, CPDS), and the Unión Popular (Popular Union, UP), the three main opposition forces. The Movimiento para la Autodeterminación de la Isla de Bioko (Movement for the Self-Determination of Bioko Island, MAIB), which is supported by most Bubis, has not joined the POC. The Church, together with the foreign services of Spain and the United States, have actively assisted the opposition despite the protests of the Guinean government. Sum. in English (p. 167), text in Spanish.
