| Abstract: | From 1960 to 1966 African exports increased significantly more than imports. Although, over 70 per cent of the increased value of exports was due to exports of newly developed petroleum resources and primary commodities still accounted for about 80 per cent of exports in 1966. The slower rate in the growth of imports is not necessarily favourable, since the economic structure of the region makes it dependent upon external sources of supply for capital and other goods needed for development.
