Abstract:It has been thought that a national university could provide the modernizing, integrating force at the top of the educational system, to motivate and lead a diverse society into national unity. The extent of national consciousness has proven to be far less than many of the nation-builders had supposed it to be. In Sudan the ethnic differences have become most apparent. Against the background of the struggle between the North and the South the place of the University of Khartoum as a national integrating institution is examined. It is not possible for the University of Khartoum to serve as a major integrating force in the Sudan outside of a general political settlement between the North and the South.
