Abstract: | The prolonged controversy over the appointment of the new Vice Chancellor, Dr. Biobaku, for the university of Lagos is, in fact, a microcosm of the complex tribal and political interplay which has characterized all the history of independent Nigeria. The incumbent Vice Chancellor, Dr. Njoku, is acclaimed as one of Nigeria's foremost scholars, but he is an Ibo from Eastern Nigeria, and the government-appointed Provisional Council is predominantly Yoruba. The article gives a brief review of the giddy tribal/regional equation of Nigerian politics. |
