Abstract:While Ethiopia had no legal channels of political opposition, the Haile Sellassie University walls acted in the 1960's as an enclosure surrounding an island on which political thinking, debating and questioning increasingly thrived together with student unions and a student press. The purpose of this article is to examine whether the impact of students from other African countries who came to study in Ethiopia at the end of the 1950, contributed to the process of the Ethiopian students' increased consciousness of Ethiopian reality. In order to do so, this article attempts to evaluate the confrontation between the two groups of students. What did each of them represent and how did they look upon each other? The author looks for possible influences of the foreign African students in the fields of student press and unionism, hypothesizing that their utmost important impact was on the Ethiopian students' attitude to the concept of authority.
